Official Lists of Textbooks and Instructional Materials

The reviews of programs recommended by the State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission for inclusion on the Official List of Textbooks and Instructional Materials were prepared by committees of classroom teachers and other experts (state advisory panels) and approved by the commission. The reviews are conducted for the twofold purpose of assisting the commission in formulating the official list and of assisting local adoption committees in selecting the textbook programs which best meet their local needs.

The academic standards approved by the State Board of Education and the textbook and instructional materials screening instrument approved by the commission comprise the basis for these reviews. The review by the state advisory panelists shall include an examination as to whether the textbooks or instructional materials:

  1. Conform to the standards for their subject areas or grade levels;
  2. Are free of any clear, substantive, factual or grammatical errors; and
  3. Comply with and reflect the values expressed in § 49-6-1 028(b), if the textbook or instructional materials are being considered for adoption as a textbook or instructional materials for education of students in general studies and specifically in United States history and this nation's republican form of government.

Disclaimer

The long-standing philosophy of the State Textbook and Instructional Materials Quality Commission has been to provide local school systems with a broad range of flexibility by including all suitable books on the official list. The information provided from the review process is, therefore, intended to assist local adoption committees, not to replace them.

These programs were reviewed by Tennessee teachers using Tennessee standards and considering the needs of Tennessee classrooms. We make no claims regarding the suitability of any of these programs for classrooms outside Tennessee.
